I'd argue that pony art in 2010 was mainly image macros which evolved into PMVs and fan art in 2011. Then animation seemed to really take off in 2012 with show accurate pieces such as Picture Perfect Pony and ongoing projects like Double Rainboom and Children of the Night.
With all that said, what mediums will be the next to evolve or to really take off in terms of fan content?
