Discussion post out of nowhere; about future Twilight! No, not the Metal Gear reference!
A thought-provoking theory - or perhaps rumor - has been going around the FiM community recently: a theory that Twilight Sparkle will become an alicorn eventually. This photo from a convention a while back was originally dismissed as a mistake by Hasbro, since their toy-producing and show-producing sectors have historically been terrible at communicating, but in light of some of the foreshadowing in the season 3 premiere, and a quote from a commercial ("and one pony will discover her true destiny"), some are thinking it may not have been a mistake.
If it were to happen, some have been saying it would suggest that Hasbro really does care more about milking its shows for profit and degrading them over time more than making excellent shows and maintaining that quality (in that context, it could make sense why Faust left: she didn't want to see her show exploited for profit and ruined), but since when was this even a question? Hasbro's definitely that way: The whole idea of the company is to make shows that market their toys. It works too. Maybe not as well as if they actively cultivated stable fan bases... but it works.
Also if it were to happen, some have made the claim that the change would ruin Twilight Sparkle's character for them, making her less relatable and more mary-sue amongst other reasons... But that also may not be true: Hasbro's been lucky with FiM. The creative team behind the show has been told to weave in mediocre concepts time and time again by Hasbro: the CMCs, that train that keeps getting thrown in episodes, Cadance and Shining Armor, the whole Royal Wedding thing, the crystal ponies, and now, perhaps Twilight as an alicorn. But time and time again they've made it work because they're good at their jobs, and they've been engaged by each other and the FiM community in a way that makes them want the show to prosper. I'm sure they'll handle this next challenge gracefully, if the theory and rumors happen to be true. I just hope the folks over at Hasbro appreciate how much the creative team behind FIM has saved them from their own shortcomings.
Anyways, this individual theory is just that for now: a theory. But if it looks like Hasbro might make a stupid decision, to be on the safe side we could let the creative team behind the show know that we fear they may be treading on thin ice if the rumors are true. They are most receptive to their fans: perhaps they can make some last-minute changes before any episodes related to the hypothetical mistake air. And even if they couldn't, it's possible that they could think of a way to fix the problem after the fact.
So I guess that's my take on the situation; What do you guys think about that madly convoluted theory? Think of any easy solutions in case it were true? How likely do you think it is? Would you dislike it, like it, or not care if that happened, and why? Any other thoughts?
For those who are "TLDR", here are the points.
- Hasbro has been steering the show to be more profitable for them.
- Speculation on Hasbro only making the Season premiere and wedding to sell their diamond pony models and toys.
- Alicorn Twi would be a big seller.
- This photo of Twi, which was dismissed by Hasbro as a mistake.
- All the hints in season 3. Such as next level of studies, the book, the stern look that Luna gave, plus the fact that Twilight pretty much represents the stars.
