[Discussion] Equestria Girls

So, apparently some of you are eager to talk about EqG. Consider this our official place for you to do that.
Drop your opinions, thoughts, rants and everything else here.

I'll add some information that I know of after the break.
If you know more, provide a reliable source.

Also, I won't partake in the discussion.

Excerpt from the NYT article
“We are responding to the desire by our fans to experience the brand in more ways,” said John A. Frascotti, Hasbro’s chief marketing officer. “They imagined themselves as which pony they would be or which pony they identified with the most.”

So Hasbro created Equestria Girls, a parallel world in which the My Little Pony characters were reconceived as teenage girls in high school. To maintain continuity, Hasbro retained the same creative talent, animation style and message of friendship.

“Our goal is to stay true to who those characters are,” said Meghan McCarthy, the head writer for the movie, adding that the high school setting allowed for new storytelling possibilities. “It’s new but still an extension of our mythology.”

“It is a major strategic initiative for us,” Mr. Frascotti said, one that will feature toys, apparel, publishing and accessories. Multimedia components include an interactive Web site, content on YouTube and a partnership with Stardoll.com, a fashion Web site for girls.

Hasbro does not break out revenue for My Little Pony, but in its earnings statement in April, the company said its girls’ category rose 23 percent in the first quarter compared with the same period last year, growth that was helped in part by the My Little Pony brand.

Equestria Girls offers an opportunity to build on that growth, said Michael Vogel, vice president for development at Hasbro Studios. “This is a bold new direction,” he said.

Not much to say at the moment. I will see it. I will review it. I will post said review here.
I'm pretty indifferent at this time. EqG doesn't jeopardize the actual show, so why should I care? If it's good, we have more to enjoy. If it's bad, no harm done. We get more content either way, so that's a plus.
TBH, I'm really liking the overall style and designs for the characters as humans. I'm glad they used the first designs we saw, and not the more recent ones which were...well, garbage. They seem to be sticking with the "charm" we've all come to enjoy from FiM, but the story as we know it isnt very interesting; the basic premise of retrieving a crown is kinda silly unless it has some great significance, and mix in high school drama, boy toys, and proms and you get Zoey 101, live action Disney drivel.

As far as interesting things goes, little to no obvious BG pony look alikes (as in Colgate, Berry Punch, or even lesser known ones) I think this is good, trying to distance it from FiM and not have too manyout side Vinyl and possibly Carrot Top. Sunset Shimmer seems cool IMO, and if that is her in the blue energy piller, she may even be an interesting threat. And Twilight adjusting to human life seems like it will be funny at least. Otherwise, not mega hopeful for this.
1) It appears this is meant to be canon, with the pony Twi heading to earth and becoming a human. I imagine it's meant to be between S3 and S4.

2) If you pause at the very first frame of the shot at about 0:10 where they all (including Luna? She's in this!) watch her go through the mirror, Spike's eyes are HUGE.

3) The animation certainly isn't as bad as I expected. It seemed rather low budget from the vectors that were leaked a few months back, but I guess that's just Hasbro official vectors. One curious thing I found is that the vectors that were leaked months back have Twi, RD, and FS with wings, (but Twi and Rarity didn't have horns), yet the human versions of the pegasi are all wingless (and the unicorns hornless for that matter). And yes, it IS Twilacorn though we can only tell through a couple really quick, weird-angle shots before she puts the saddlebag on.

4) And now for the bad stuff animation-wise. The couple shots of Twi's first introduction to humanness is hella awkward, and it's very off-putting how they're all humans, but still have candy-colored skin.

5) Twi has a love interest? And there's a biatch who's clearly the antagonist? This isn't cliche at all!

5) Thankfully, the voice acting seems to all be the original talent, so it seems we'll be fine in that area.

6) VINYL SCRATCH!!!! Oh and the CMC. Shouldn't they be in like elementary school or something? And they're not even aged up or anything.

7) i really hope this background track isn't in the actual thing. I know for movies though it's actually really common for music to be last-minute, and not done before the trailers. Usually it's just stock music that the studio has the rights to, so maybe this is some other Network Music Ensemble thing that's way less catchy than Giddy Up.

8) Pause at 0:45 (Yes, I'm 8 items in and only that far) Are Fluttershy and AJ wearing strap-on (hehe) pony ears? Also is Spike still in love with Rarity in dog form? Isn't that like, bestiality or something? (not that BABY dragon-pony interaction isn't weird anyway) Who knows, maybe he's just in love with her leg.

9) This centers around a prom? How...exciting. /sarcasm

10) Real Pinkie's face in the end. JUST LOOK AT IT.

EDIT: EQD mentioned that the villain looks a lot like Sunset Shimmer, who mentioned that she didn't know who the character was, and implied that she legitimately didn't know, even though she wrote this. According to Rusticware's reply to me on EQD she said that she was "not being secretive or evasive."

Oh that wasn't enough text for you? That's right, I'm analyzing that NYT article too!
"To maintain continuity, Hasbro retained the same creative talent, animation style and message of friendship."

Well I already figured out the talent one, and I'm glad on the message of friendship. I wouldn't exactly call it the same animation style, since it's hard to do that with completely different creatures. The exception being the Equestria portions, or course.

'“Our goal is to stay true to who those characters are,” said Meghan McCarthy, the head writer for the movie, adding that the high school setting allowed for new storytelling possibilities. “It’s new but still an extension of our mythology.”'

There, this is ****ING CANON. The "the high school setting allowed for new storytelling possibilities" quote made me laugh though.

'The movie — titled “My Little Pony: Equestria Girls” — will be released on DVD later in the United States and other markets worldwide, followed by a television debut on the Hub network in the fall.'

So if you don't want to pay to go see this, or drive hours to the nearest theater (the nearest one to me is 1 hour, 45 minutes away), we can wait for it to air on the Hub in the fall. If you have the Hub you can watch it there, or I imagine it'll be on the interwebz within hours.

"This is a bold new direction”
-Mike Vogel, Hasbro Vice President for Development

Just another hilarious quote.

Okay I'm done now.
What? Did you say something?
Dude.. stop.

Sorry, but.. you're just desperately looking for flaws to make EQG look like something really awful.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not defending it. I think it will be like a 6/10 movie. It's just that, your arguments..

Also, no, it's not canon. Just look at that twitter.
Actually if you read the previous comment, I did say a few good things about it. I'm still gonna see it probably when it airs on the Hub with a completely open mind. I'm just analyzing the trailer for now (and the NYT article).

EDIT: Just because it's separate from S4 doesn't mean it's not canon. By that logic, S1-S3 are also not canon.
I read it all.
But some of your arguments are just... okay, sorry.

About being canon or not, I understand your logic but come on, we know what Meghan meant.
Let's not get conspiratory and just use some reasoning instead.
"still an extension of our mythology”'

That seems pretty clear.
Going with that header image, it will no doubt be SMASHING.

But seriously, can't really say at this point, knowing really so little outside of a trailer. It's been given not to affect the show itself, so there's little to worry about there. I'm not really much of one for speculation. If nothing else, I'll see it out of pure curiosity to see how good/bad it is.
Pause at 0:28 seconds. Twi has a book with her friends as children, sans her. So I guess maybe this world didnt have a human Twi ever, or she just never stopped being a shut in and never met them.
I am scared about how much i care about this.
But the fact that EQG and S4 are separate really lightened my mood.
Well, it all has been sad. shipping twi with a guy who kinda looks like shining -> BAD
Making a movie that incolves everything that was originally banned from MLP -> BAD
Voice acting and less alien lke humans -> better than expected.

Ponies belong to equestria, but this movie might not be as bad as i think it will...
I won't watch it. Lalalüüüü~
I'll just repeat what I said on the chat:

Honestly, the animations look great, the characters' designs aren't bad, there seem to be some nice comedy and the characters stay true to their personalities. Those facts you CAN'T deny.

So the only thing I'm concerned with is the storyline. Seems to be poor because it's all highschool and all.

But we have our writers, our musician and our VA's. Really, the only thing we can complain about so far is the storyline. I can't think of anything else.

AND for some clarification: no, we bronies are NOT the target audience for EQG.

There was that one market officer from Hasbro that said:

"Now as we look ahead to the fall of 2013, we’re launching an entirely new pony brand expression in our top-10 countries. We’re going to launch it with a made-for-TV movie and full execution of this new IP across our blueprint. We did a tremendous amount of research, and our consumer insights told us that girls want more ways to play with My Little Pony and more ways to experience My Little Pony, so we’ve developed a brand new expression of My Little Pony—an entirely new IP—that will appeal to slightly older girls and give them an even “cooler” way to play with My Little Pony. And we’ll deliver this IP across multiple product categories within toy and other categories as well, and then importantly across all of our digital platforms. We’ll be revealing this new IP later this summer with full-fledged pink carpet events at major pop culture venues like San Diego’s Comic-Con, so you’ll be hearing more about this new IP as the year unfolds."

See?
That's all.
The hype has been doubled.

Only one of me still, actually.
Do I think it'll be good overall? No, and I never really did. I just don't think the plot is salvageable.
That said, the side jokes, the shout-outs, and the music should be enjoyable, and I'll probably watch it for that alone.
Hm.. I'll probably watch it when its released on Netflix or something but I'm not paying ticket fees to watch a show that ships Twilight with what appears to be an OC right out of the gate either. It flies in the face of my seven OTP's, not including the comical everyone is lesbian for Twilight angle, involving Twilight and none of them have OCs. Other than it apparently going the Winx route of dumping a guy in her lap out of the gate I suppose it might be interesting since at least I'm not left trying to figure out why she doesn't have a horn now. Those redesigns made no sense to me given that both Twilight and Rarity lacked horns but the pegasi and Twilight had wings.

Also, is this how they are debuting Shimmers? As a human unless you have seen or bought her pony toy already it seems a bit of a jump ahead. Or is this the only place we are going to see Sunset anyway?
Style kind of sucks, will hopefully not be more moronic high school drama drivel, but probably will. Not excited. Still a lot of fun to make fun of.
Well, I'm encouraged by the fact that the same team who works on FiM worked on Equestria Girls. One of the reasons FiM is so great is because of what the characters do and how they do it. EG obviously has way different character design but as long as their original personalities are carried across by the FiM team, I think it's got a fighting chance within the Brony community. When you hear someone explain why pony x is their favourite, they'll argue based on pony x's personality traits not on their character design. That's not to say that visual appeal is irrelevant, heck that's most of why I started watching this show in the first place. I just think solid, relatable characters are absolutely essential for a good show.

What will probably be a bigger hurdle for the Brony community is that the Equestria Girls designs are so... well, well defined. Look at a FiM pony. Ambiguous age, not a readily apparent gender, no region-specific attire. You can map a heck of a lot of different people onto that pony, which is why FiM has such a diverse fan base. It's not a big reach to see yourself in one of the characters. With Equestria Girls, we have obviously teen-aged characters who are obviously female or male, from a western culture. It seems a lot less likely to reach outside of a very specific target demographic. I don't know how well I can relate to a human Rainbow Dash that's going to be way more different from me than a pony RD.

As for the storyline, from the bits we've seen I'm not overly impressed. It's better to withhold judgement on that until we get a clearer picture of what happens in the movie IMO. I'm sure Thiessen et al will do an admirable job within the confines of Hasbro's story requirements.
I hope it crashes and burns hard.
Withholding judgement until I see it. No point in raging at something we haven't seen yet.
